New for 2017 – the Technology stream

The Technology stream will consider the impact that breakthrough technologies are having on financial services, and how they can deliver value to customers as well as address the challenges of cybersecurity.

Collaboration between the financial services industry and FinTech ventures is gathering speed, opening up opportunities for both. Working in partnership enables the industry and its customers to benefit from the latest innovations while giving technology start-ups access to the financial strength and scale needed to commercialise their ideas.

With the industry increasingly embracing FinTech, what does that mean for the push into financial services by ‘BigTech’ players such as Google, Apple and Facebook? And as cybercriminals improve their tactics and techniques faster than security teams can keep up, what measures can be put in place to reduce the risk whilst allowing employees to carry on with business as usual?

Sibos footprint expands with record Chinese representation

Five Chinese banks, including the Agricultural Bank of China, Bank of China, Baoshang Bank, China Construction Bank, and Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, and two market infrastructures, China Central Depository & Clearing (CCDC) and China Foreign Exchange Trade System & National Interbank Funding Center (CFETS), will exhibit at Sibos 2017, making it the largest representation from China in the event’s history.

Daphne Huang, Head of China, SWIFT, said: “Sibos is the venue of choice for Chinese financial institutions to come meet their peers, build networks and contribute to the future
of the financial industry. China’s presence at Sibos has been growing over the years and we are delighted to receive such a strong delegation in Toronto”.

Make an appointment at the Standards Forum

The financial industry continues to evolve due to disruption, regulation, competition and increasing customer expectations. Standards offer a way to work together to meet these challenges, to reduce costs, accelerate innovation and unlock value.

Practical information

Reduce the impact of travelling to Sibos

Travelling to Sibos impacts our environment. Sibos delegates can make a difference by planting trees which are known for cooling our climate, bringing water back and creating jobs to alleviate poverty. During the registration process, you can add 10 euros to your registration fee, which will be put towards reforestation projects.

Sibos is partnering with WeForest on this tree planting project, and the Sibos trees will
be planted in India, supporting Khasi communities to regenerate their forest.

Networking

Explore the Zones at Sibos 2017

To make networking easier and more informative, the MTCC will be split into six distinct Zones – Meet, Inspire, Inform, Discover, Learn and Connect.

Each zone will include unique features for you to interact with, such as:

  • Two Open Theatres, where exhibiting companies will tackle industry issues.
  • Pop up Health Corners, which will provide delegates and exhibitors with free healthy drinks and snacks.
  • Meeting Pods, where you can host 30 minute meetings.
  • A Library, a quiet and inspirational environment to work in, equipped with mobile charging stations.

Check out the Canada Lounge

Following the success of the FinTech Corner in Geneva last year, the Canada Lounge will play host to 32 Canadian FinTech startups who will showcase their solutions in payments, securities markets, cybersecurity and RegTech.

The participating startups will have the opportunity to network with Sibos delegates, and will also benefit from boot camps with leading FinTech advisers and on-site support from the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service.

Spotlight on Toronto:
Did you know?

Toronto’s story begins several millennia ago. Archaeological
finds in the area uncovered evidence of First Nations settlements
dating back thousands of years.

Today, Toronto is a flourishing metropolis and a major financial centre,
but did you know...

The work of Frederick Banting and Charles Best at
the University of Toronto led to the discovery of insulin as a treatment for diabetes in 1922.

In 1961, James Till and Ernest McCulloch’s work at the Ontario Cancer Institute pioneered stem cell research.

In early August, Toronto hosts Caribana, a festival celebrating Caribbean culture. It’s North America’s largest one-day parade, covering 3.6 kilometres
and attracting over one million spectators.

The glass floor at the top of the CN Tower was the world’s first. And it can withstand the weight of 14 large hippos.

The Canadarm was invented in Toronto by MDA Space Missions in 1981, and is used on space shuttles to deploy, manoeuvre and capture payloads.

MaRS Discovery District is one of the largest and most successful tech accelerators in the world. As of 2014, startup companies emerging from MaRS had created more than 4,000 jobs.

It’s projected that by 2020, Toronto will have the highest number of high-rise condominiums in the world.
